Abstract
In this paper the present status of theoretical understanding - mostly
relying on mean-field dynamo models - of global magnetic activity of
late-type stars with convective envelopes is reviewed. The principles
of the mean-field dynamo theory are introduced, and a discussion on
some of the present-day problems and challenges is presented. The
remaining sections are devoted to discuss the current status of solar
and stellar dynamo models.
