Abstract
Multi-wavelength observations of galaxies are revolutionising our understanding of the large-scale star formation patterns in galaxies, and have led to renewed theoretical efforts to understand the physical processes which trigger and regulate star formation on galactic scales. This talk reviews recent progress on this problem and highlights open questions for investigation with Herschel and other new facilities.
